If there is a build up of coffee residue and aluminium oxide where the water cylinder fits in the main body of the Espresso maker it may affect the way the water cylinder fits.

This can be removed with cotton wool dabbed with a little vinegar. Thereafter, fairly regular (depending upon usage) cleaning with soapy water and thorough drying should keep your ROK in excellent condition. Full cleaning instructions can be found under the FAQ section of our website.

If the vinegar does not work, I would suggest trying either of the following:

  1. a metal cleaner to remove the oxidisation followed by a metal polish. A good hardware store should be able to help you find a suitable non-scratching cleaner.
  2. sand paper (Wet & Dry) and then a light coating of petroleum jelly prior to re-assembling the cylinder. This will ease any future removal.

Note that the water/coffee does not come into contact with this part of the machine during use. The passage of water through the machine touches only food grade polymers and steel and any marking is purely cosmetic.

The next thing to check is that the Conversion kit is fitted correctly checking that there are no rucks or lumps around the circumference of the silicone seal.
